Landscape - Rock

Step 1: Paint the rocks

Colours: Raw Umber (Holbein) / Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt)

• Paint the rock with Ram Umber
• Add Ultramarine Deep in the shading areas
• Drop some vermilion on the rock randomly
• Wait for it dry about 50%-70%
• Use Palette Knife or Credit Card to scrape the texture on the rocks

Step 2: Paint the water

Colours: Cerulean Blue (Rembrandt)  / Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) 

• Paint the mid-tone in Cerulean Blue and fade out 
• Paint the water near the bottom in Ultramarine Deep 

Step 3: Sky

Colours: Azo Yellow Medium (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt)

• Paint the sky near the water in Azo Yellow Medium 
• Add more Azo Yellow Medium and paint upwards
• Add a bit Vermilion to Azo Yellow Medium and paint the top of the sky 

Step 4: Reflections of the rocks

Colours: Raw Umber (Holbein) / Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt) 

• Paint the water near the rocks in Raw Umber and Ultramarine Deep
• Put few lines of Vermilion accordingly

Step 5: Shadows of the rocks

Colours:  Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt) 

• Mix Ultramarine Deep and Vermilion and paint the shadows of the rocks
• Use the same colours to paint the water surface near the rocks 

Step 6: Yachts

Colours:  Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt) / Azo Yellow Medium (Rembrandt)

• Use light green (the mix of Ultramarine Deep and Azo Yellow Medium) and light orange (the mix of Vermilion and Azo Yellow Medium to paint the Yachts
• Paint the bottom in light Ultramarine Deep
• Reuse the colours and paint the reflections accordingly

Step 7: Background

Colours:  Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) / Vermilion (Rembrandt) 

• Use light purple (the mix of Ultramarine Deep and Vermilion) to paint the mountains on the background

Colours: Viridian, Azo Yellow Medium, Cobalt Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Umber, Indigo (Rembrandt)

Step 1: Mask the fence

Colours: Masking Fluid

• Masking the fences with the masking fluid

Step 2: Paint the Rocks (1st Layer)

• 1st layer: Viridian, Alizarin Crimson, Indigo (dark areas)
• Wet for dry

Step 2: Paint the Rocks (2ndLayer)

• 2nd layer: Raw Umber
• When 2nd is still damp, scratch the lighter areas of the rocks

Step 3: Refine the detail

• Paint the cracks and enhance the dark areas with Indigo

Step 4: Sand

• Use Azo Yellow Medium and Raw Umber to paint the sand
• Leave some white areas and put the shadows with Raw Umber

Step 5: Water

• Viridian for the main colour of the water
• Indigo and colours close to the rocks can be painted on the water near the rocks

Step 5: Birds

• Light Indigo for the distance birds

Step 6: Sky

• Light Indigo 
• Leave some space between the rocks and the sky

We talked about the special offer from an art supply store. It's good to have the latest information from different places. The advantage of visiting the store can compare not only the prices but also with some other products. The staff can also give you the useful information about the products.

Another day a student brought everyone a piece of cloth for covering the desk. The dark blue colour works so well with the white paper. And it also looks more professional with it. Thank you Fong!

The last lesson we were working on the macaws. It was so funny that Victoria gave us a fake eye for the bird. It looks like a cartoon macaw. It is quite creative!

最後我們畫的是鸚鵡，Victoria給了我們一隻手工用的眼睛，有不同的大小，可配合不同的鸚鵡，放在畫上，很可愛，整個感覺完全不同，很卡通和很有創意！

The Goddess Project #6 - Medusa

Caravaggio is one of the artist depicted Medusa during Renaissance. One of my favourite artists, Aubrey Beardsley, has his own Nouveau style for the illustration of the Medusa's story. Medusa was once a very beautiful woman. Forgot her vow and married to Poseidon, she was punished by the goddess and turned into this horrible look.

We had a fabulous model tonight and she wore a snake headdress with a professional make-up. It was a declining pose tonight but I would like to focus more on her face and head. The first part of the watercolour was painted on her face which defined her facial expression first. The model has got beautiful eyes which the eyes look like gems.

I started with warm and cold colors on her face, warmer colours on the right side and cooler on the left. Eyes are in yellow-green first. Some purple is applied on the lips. The model was wearing a snake headdress. To make it more natural, I painted some snakes from the headdress and added some more snakes as her hair.

The colours I used are from Talen Rembrandt. They are Azo Yellow (Light and Medium), Vermilion, Q. Rose, Ultramarine Deep, Permanent Blue Violet, Indigo and Olive Green.

The Mood

Medusa is from the myth. I would like to introduce some unreal feeling by soft edges with wet-on-wet techniques. The snakes flow freely and I painted some curves in the background. The arms and the dress are soft. The focus will be on her face, snakes and then fading out. 

The Colours

Warm colours are on the face and her chest and arms, skin tones. And these are surrounded by cooler colours, green, blue and purple. 

I love the eyes colours and the way she stares at us!

Step 1: Background

Colours: Azo Yellow Light / Cobalt Blue

• Wet the background with the clean water, keep a distance from the bird
• Drop Cobalt Blue and Yellow on the water
• Use a smaller brush to refine the edge when the paint is still wet
• Use a dry brush to absorb excess water near the edges

Step 2: Face and Neck

Colours: Azo Yellow Light / Cobalt Blue / Crimson Red

• Paint the face and beak with Cobalt Blue (lighter)
• Paint the neck with Yellow 
• Mix Yellow and Crimson Red for the orange colour and paint with a flat brush for the neck feathers.

Step 3: Blue Feathers

Colours: Cerulean Blue

• Paint the feathers with Cerulean Blue 

Step 4: Head and Blue Feathers

Colours: Azo Yellow Light / Cobalt Blue / Cerulean Blue 

• When the paint is still wet, drop some yellow colour on the front head and the edge near the face, the yellow will mix with blue and become green
• Paint the rest of the feathers with Cerulean and Cobalt blue

 

Step 5: Details

Colours:  Cobalt Blue /Indigo

• Use the flat brush to paint the feather lines with Cobalt Blue
• Draw the eye with Indigo

 

Step 6: Details

Colours:  Cobalt Blue /Indigo

• Continue to draw the details with Cobalt Blue mixed with Indigo
• Draw the marks on the face and the beck in Indigo
• Apple some Indigo in some darker shadow
• Lift the paint with a damp brush for the highlights
